Built to streamline meat processing, the facility at Oko-Oba, Agege, became a, key hub for cattle and meat distribution. Located in the Agege area, it occupies a significant space, often struggling to manage environmental impacts from slaughtering activities. The abattoir has repeatedly been shut down by the Lagos State Government due to extremely poor sanitary conditions, including people sleeping in animal pens, improper waste disposal, and the sale of unhygienic meat. The Lagos State Government (as of mid-2025) has continued to enforce closures to force compliance with health standards and has sought to modernize the facility, including commissioning road upgrades and, in some cases, enforcing the relocation of traders to improved, legal sites. Due to its size and high volume, illegal, unregistered, or 'clandestine' slaughtering has occasionally occurred in nearby areas.
